Abstract:
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG covers the whole process of printmedia production, from prepress to postpress. Environmental product assessments have been carried out for several products. Two examples are presented, a professional scanning unit and a printing machine. The analysis includes the compilation of mass and energy balances and focuses on the production and use phase of the product. Additionally, dismantling is studied in a recycling facility. The overall goal of the environmental product improvements is to offer promising economic perspectives for customers by environmentally and economically more efficient products.
Main results of the product assessments include that the use phase dominates the overall environmental impact and that environmental considerations must not be neglected in the design process. By a redesign of the scanning unit, the power consumption was reduced by 20%, material consumption by 40%, dismantling time from 60 to 15 minutes. The analysis of the printing machine showed an overwhelming importance of the use phase. After 10 years, the amount of waste from the use phase is eight times higher than the weight of the machine. Hence, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG developed its "Star" technologies, which significantly reduce the consumption of energy and materials and the amount of wastes during printing.
For EE SMEs, this case study shows how a company can develop more efficient products with better economic perspectives for the customers and thus, achieve a competitive advantage and significant business benefits. It also illustrates the importance of the use phase in the case of long-life products, which is very relevant for the environmental effects and economic effects for the customers. The overall motto of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG is "Environmental protection for the customer's benefit".
